On February 20th, 2013 Mrs. April Jones was recognized as the classified faculty member of the year. She was honored by Mr. Craig Harvey from Horrace Mann insurance. Faculty members voted earlier in the month for who they thought made a big difference in the lives of student at the school. The teachers said of Mrs. Jones - The kids love her. She plans great lessons and activities for the students. She is flexible with plans, when grades need to use the gym, she does other activities that can be done in the atriums. Mrs. Jones found the missing file for inventory for the school!

Our theme for this project was “Fish”. Students started by tracing a fish on their papers. Detail and color were added to their fish using a shaving cream mixture and coloring. The mixture was put on their fish and left to dry.
Students cut out their fish in the next art class and glued it to their black paper.

Students were told to select a fish and draw it on their white art paper. The only condition was that they keep their fish simple. Next, they transferred their fish onto their plates, with permanent marker.
The next several art classes were spent painting the fish. Students were encouraged to mix colors to create different hues and tones.
The last step was to “lead” their fish. A steady hand and a lot of concentration was needed.

Way to Go ! They are Great.

Spring Lake Elementary students were excited to be visited by Clark Planetarium. The
Planetarium put on a whole school science demonstration for k-6 students followed by
another hour of sixth grade Core Science. Some of the highlights included touching a real
meteorite and sixth-grade teacher, Erica Fordiani, helping to demonstrate the heat shield
on an actual piece of the Space Shuttle! This was all part of Clark Planetarium’s outreach
program which was provided at no cost to the school. The program is funded by the Utah

Spring Lake Elementary students had a special visit from Utah NetSmartz, a special program provided for schools throughout Utah by the Boys & Girls Clubs. NetSmartz Outreach Coordinator, Jenny Decker, along with her interactive friends, gave presentations on internet safety geared for different age groups. Students were reminded, in a very fun way, how to stay safe on the internet.

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, guest readers from the City of Payson came to Spring Lake Elementary to participate in the Read Across America Campaign. During the week leading up to Dr. Seuss’ birthday city employees visited the library at Spring Lake Elementary to read to students. Mrs. Phillips, the school librarian, contacted the Mayor to see if he and other city employees would like to participate and was pleased by the overwhelming response. Of course, the students loved their visit too!
