As part of their study of government, the Constitution, and the legislative process, the fifth graders from Spring Lake Elementary spent their school day at the state legislative session on Thursday, February 16. In preparation for their visit they had taken opportunity to observe the session at school via live video streaming. The students were able to then go and actually spending significant time observing the business of debating and voting in the House and Senate from the galleries at the Capitol. In addition, students enjoyed touring the capitol building and were especially impressed by the beauty of the Gold Room, the Supreme Court Room, the Governor’s Office, and of course the Rotunda itself.
Representative Patrick Painter hosted the visit and spent some time with the students explaining the legislative process and answering questions. He treated the students to a tasty pizza lunch. Representative Painter thanked the students for taking time to learn about their government and for dressing and behaving in a respectful manner. Students felt they definitely enjoyed an educational trip and a day well spent.
