On January 4th Spring Lake student, Lillian Spieth, received a very special award during the school assembly. Special guests Mr. and Mrs. Terrell from Bonnie Plants along with two guests from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food Larry Lewis and Leonard Blackham, the Utah State Commissioner of Agriculture and Food, came to present Lillian with a check for one thousand dollars for being Utah’s State winner of the Bonnie Plants Cabbage Growing Contest.
Each year Bonnie Plants sends out thousands of cabbage starter plants to third grade students across the nation. The students plant and care for their cabbages throughout the summer and then take a picture with the end result. Each teacher then chooses a class winner and submits it to Bonnie Plants. This program was implemented back in 2002 to encourage young people to develop a love for gardening and cultivate a better understanding of agriculture. Lillian’s
cabbage weighed in at a whopping 50.5 pounds! She plans on putting the $1,000 dollars in a saving account for her college education.
