Spring Lake Elementary is completing a six week residency with District Dance Specialist, Melanie Fillmore. Mrs. Fillmore is part of the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program and is a member of the curriculum coaching staff.  During her visit she models for teachers the use of dance and movement as a teaching tool for core subjects in math, science, social studies, and literature.

In celebration of Dr. Suess’s birthday, and National Reading Day, Mrs. Fillmore dressed up as the Cat in the Hat and read some of Dr. Suess’s books with students, adding dance to the classic rhymes and messages. First grade students use colorful scarves and dance to Dr. Suess's “My Many Colored Days.".  Some classes have learned yoga poses as a way to offer a productive movement break in the day or as a way to smooth transitions.
