Part of our science core for fourth-grade is that students will understand how fossils are made and do investigations with fossils. Luckily for us at Spring Lake Elementary School, we have a really nice landowner in our neighborhood, that has fossils on his property. For the past five or six years he has allowed us to take a one mile hike up into the foothills on his property and look for fossils. Over fifty percent of the students find fossils. They are mostly fossilized clams from ancient seas that used to cover the area around our school. Once in a  while a student will find some coral or other sea life embedded in the sedimentary rocks around the foot hills. Parents and students agree it is a great way to learn about fossils.
