In fourth-grade, we are doing a lesson on equivalent fractions. We have decided to tie it to quilt making, specifically, patchwork quilts like the Utah pioneers made. The patterns were produced using many equivalent fractions.

As part of our Utah history lesson, we thought it a perfect opportunity to let the students design a quilt pattern using equivalent fractions. They use halves fourths and eighths to design their quilt square then we put each square together to make a quilt. We then showed them some pioneer quilts and had them look for equivalent fractions in the quilts we used as examples.
