Making Fossils

In Mr. Atkin's 4th grade class, we are learning about preserving organism and other kinds of fossils. We explore all the many kinds of insects that get trapped in ancient tree resin which later hardens and fossilizes into amber preserving the ancient insects inside. After the lesson on preserved organisms, the kids get to make some. They have to catch an insect, freeze it (usually in the faculty freezer, much to some teacher's dismay), and then later cover it with an epoxy. The kids love making these models of preserved organism and some turn out really interesting.
